The MCP23017 is a 16-bit I/O expander that communicates via the I2C interface. It allows you to multiply the available GPIO pins for your microcontrollers, providing 16 remote bidirectional input/output pins.
This component is ideal for managing keypads, LED displays, or other peripherals requiring more control lines than your main board offers. Hardware addressing via three pins allows up to eight modules to be connected on the same I2C bus.
