The very popular 595 shift register chip of the 74 series is widely used by hobbyists because of its wide availability, good speed and simplicity.
Just plug it on an Arduino as shown in the tutorials and you get 8 more outputs; cascade two to get 16 more outputs (and many more if needed, using only three pins).
